Looking Beyond The Top-20 Business Schools


If your GMAT score is somewhere in the mid-600s, you have 2-5 years of full-time work experience, and you are looking for a business school that has a decent brand name, good programs, and yet does not burn too deep a hole in your pocket, here are a few options worth considering:

1. University of Iowa, Tippie School of Management: The Marketing Program in Iowa Tippie ranks among the top 25 U.S. Business Schools.  The total tuition and fees for a Full Time MBA program is $31,119 for non-residents and $17,555 for Iowa residents in the first year. Tippie has been recognized by numerous publications including Forbes, The Financial Times and Business Week as a school that has one of the strongest Return on Investments among top 45 MBA programs worldwide.  Tippie also offers merit-based aids to 65% of enrolled students each year.
 
2. The Ohio State University, Fisher College of Business: Ranked 26thby the U.S. Business News and World Reports, Fisher is singled out by publications like the Wall Street Journal for its strong base of recruiters. Its focus on Leadership and Professional development is noteworthy. The tuition and fees in the first year for a Full Time MBA program is $40,640 for non-resident and international students and $25,400 for Ohio residents.  International applicants consistently form more than 30% of students admitted each year. All applicants to Fisher's full-time MBA program are automatically considered for merit-based awards, ranging in value from $1,500 to full-tuition. Fisher also awards 20 graduate assistantships to its incoming MBA class each year. They typically involve a 10-hour per week work schedule, translating into a 50% tuition waiver as well as a monthly stipend during the academic school year.
 
3. University of Rochester, William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration: With more than 40% of its admitted class comprised of international students, Simon is one of the most culturally diverse business schools. Simon is renowned for its strong focus on leadership. The average annual tuition and fees for a full-time MBA program in Simon, including living expenses would be approximately $64,671. Over 80% of Simon's students receive merit-based scholarships. A new International Student Loan Program (ISLP) is also slated to offer partial funding toward full-time MBA studies, effective September 2009.
 
4.  Indiana University, Kelley School of Business: With 37% of its student body born in a country other than the U.S., Kelley is known to be a cultural melting pot of a business school.  Kelley's emphasis on experiential learning and leadership is noteworthy. The average annual tuition for international candidates including living expense is approximately $62,315. Tuition for in-state applicants is $22,000 and $41,000 for out of state, international applicants for the first year.  More than half of Kelley's students receive merit-aid, with awards ranging from $5,000 to full tuition.
