GMAT Do's and Don'ts: Scheduling your GMAT Test Part I

It is already the second half of January and those of you who made a New Year Resolution to tame the GMAT beast, well, time for procrastination is over. Get up, go to the book store, buy the GMAT Official Guide 12th Edition, and start preparing. Right? Well not quite. Turns out planning and scheduling your actual GMAT test - yes the one where you go to a REAL center, not the one which you take in your PJs while snacking on Doritos and sipping Coke Zero - is essential to the best GMAT score you can get. Following is part I of GMAT Do's and Don'ts. In this blog, I deal with some obvious and some not-so-obvious tips for scheduling your GMAT test.

10. Do check out your test center in advance - familiarity helps you calm your nerves on the test day.
9. Schedule your GMAT on a day when you feel freshest during the week.
8. However, Mondays and day after long breaks are the busiest days for test centers; try to avoid those days.
7. Pick a time slot for your GMAT when you are most alert, and when you have taken most of your practice tests.
6. It's better to schedule your GMAT at a center within 10-15 minutes drive from your home; long drives to test centers can affect your mental readiness.
5. Poorly designed test centers with cramped rooms, noisy keyboards, and busy neighborhoods can affect your test performance. Avoid them.
4. If you are over 100 points away from your target score, register for your GMAT 2-3 months later.
3. Schedule your GMAT at least 1 month prior to your first MBA application deadline; you can only retake GMAT once a month.
2. Schedule your GMAT sooner rather than later. GMAT is just the FIRST component of your MBA application; delaying the GMAT delays your MBA plans.
1. Download GMATPrep from MBA.com today and take your first full-length practice test. It's free and only takes 3.5 hours. It will help you plan your GMAT preparation and nail your target test date.

In the next blog in this series, I will discuss GMAT preparation tips, including a table for planning your daily schedule.
