How to face Business School Interviews

It is that time of the year when interview calls from B-schools are pouring in. Congratulations to all Gurome members who have so far got interview calls from Ross, Yale, Haas, Kelley, Anderson, Stanford, Imperial College Business school…and we are still counting. The interview calls for the second round of application for many schools are yet to be sent out. But here is a list of things that you must know before you face the all-important interview.

  1. Read you application essays and resume carefully and stay consistent with the story.
  2. Most interviews are blind interviews where the interviewer has only your resume with her. You should know your resume well.
  3. Take cue from the questions. For example, when an interviewer asks you about your background, do not just start from your school and end at your current job. Make it interesting.
  4. Listen. If needed, pause and collect your thoughts before you start answering a question.
  5. Try to end each response with a smile so that your interviewer knows when to move on to the next question.
  6. It is okay if you do not have answers to questions such as "Have you ever faced a moral/ethical dilemma". If you have not faced any ethical dilemma, it is better that you say so, instead of trying to invent something on the spot.
  7. Most interviewers like to end the interview session asking the candidate whether she has any question/s to ask. Do not barrage the interviewer with questions but be prepared with at least one or two questions. Do not ask questions whose answers can be obtained from the official website of the school.
  8. Make eye contact and ensure that you are audible.
  9. Dress formally. A business suit and formal shoes are recommended.
  10. While a little bit of nervous energy is natural, learn to relax and wear a smile.
