Does your résumé talk?

Companies today think differently and recruit differently. Why should your résumé have the format that was used by the earlier generation? Why would you model your résumé after someone's when you have your own story to tell? Make your résumé talk for you.

Is your résumé well differentiated?

Let's face it. You are probably applying for a position with a hundred other candidates. Is there a reason why an employer would spend more than 30 seconds on scanning your résumé? Your résumé is your first introduction to your potential employer and you need to sell yourself well. Listing out job descriptions and your qualifications is not going to get you that "interview" with your potential employer.

Does your résumé convey your career story?

Every candidate has a story and the résumé should be structured to tell that story. You must begin your résumé with your story and build it up by focusing on your career path. It is good to have a career objective in your resume that clearly conveys what you are looking for in the organization and the value you will bring to the organization. Try to bring out your key accomplishments and the value it has created for the organization rather than list mere job descriptions and the different positions you have held so far. If you can quote specific figures and numbers (such as the sales volume, % cost saving, etc.), do so!

How much do you know the company you are seeking a position at?

It is important for you to know the company you are a seeking a position in. You can carve out a role for yourself if you understand the company's strategy. This is especially useful when you are writing a cover letter to the company.

Does you résumé take into consideration the fact that the audience is different?

Any audience, be it a potential employer or the admissions officers in a B-school, appreciate it when you can show them that you have drafted something especially for them.  A résumé for job search will not work for a Business School because they are not necessarily looking for your JAVA and SAP skills. Even when you are applying for similar positions in two different companies, it is important to tweak your résumé according to the image that a particular company projects.  A company such as Google has consciously created a brand image and it is important that you take note of that. The résumé you have used for Cisco may not work for Google and vice-versa.
