Healthcare Crisis: Is there one, really?

I wrote a blog http://www.gurome.com/Blog/19263 a week back about an upcoming Gurome event that features officers of the healthcare clubs from various top MBA programs. The event was posted on various social media groups, including the Linked In group for Haas School of Business. Following is a verbatim of the comments that were posted (names withheld). I thought it would be instructive to post those and my response to those comments. This may help address some of the similar questions others may have.

RW: Crisis?? By whose definition?

JVE: I had the same thoughts as Richard here... What global health care crisis?

Anurag: Thanks for those comments R and J. Pardon me for an overly simplified view of the state of healthcare globally. A couple of clarifications are in order (if you look at the blogs that have been put out about the event, you can get a better perspective on the theme of the panel):

1. The term "global" primarily focuses on the emerging nations covering over sixy percent of the population that resides in parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

2. The term "crisis" is certainly open to debate - but is worth debating. Anyone who works in these emerging nations will see the widening gap between the increase in disease burden (such as that from coronary artery disease and diabetes) and the ability of these nations to pay for it over very long term. In some ways, the "crisis" is still unfolding, but for those of us in healthcare, it might as well be here.

3. The term "crisis" has also been used for healthcare in America. But I will steer clear of it due to the obvious political undertones. The panel will attempt to address that as well.

Hope that addresses your concerns to certain extent.

Does it yours? Comments welcome.
