Gurome's Quant Blog Series - Arithmetic A9 Aug 8, 2010

For all those who did not get the correct solution to yesterday's question on quant, here's s the solution with an explanation.

Solution

Let the LCM be l and the HCF be h.

Therefore l + h = 592 and l - h = 518.

On adding we have that 2l = 1110 or l = 555 or h = 592 - 555 = 37.

555 = 111* 5= 37*3*5

(1)   3 is a factor of one of the numbers.

We observe that both the pairs37*3, 37*5and 37, 37*3*5 satisfy this condition. We don't get a unique answer.

So, (1) is NOT SUFFICIENT to answer the question.

(2)   It says that 5 is a factor of one of the numbers.

Again both the pairs of numbers37*3, 37*5and 37, 37*3*5 satisfy this condition. So, we don't get a unique answer.

So, (2) is NOT SUFFICIENT to answer the question.

Combining (1) and (2), again the above mentioned pairs satisfy both the conditions and we do not get any unique answer.

Hence we conclude that statements (1) and (2) together are not sufficient to answer the question.

The correct answer is (E).

Note:

Ø  Since the sum and difference of LCM and HCF of numbers are given, so we can easily find the LCM and HCF of two numbers.

Ø  We know the LCM and HCF of numbers, so using the information in the statements; we can see the possibilities of finding the numbers. In this case both the statements are not giving a unique answer and neither does combining the two help.

Difficulty level: 600
