Chicago Booth MBA Application Essay Tips for Fall 2011

Founded in 1898, Chicago Booth is the second-oldest business school in the world. However, Chicago Booth has constantly striven to adapt itself to the changes in the business world. Some of the new courses that Chicago Booth introduced are: The Analytics of Financial Crises; The Firm and the Non-Market Environment; Business, Politics, and Ethics.

Here are some exclusive Gurome tips to help you navigate the Chicago Booth MBA Application Essays.

Essay 1: The Admissions Committee is interested in learning more about you on both a personal and professional level.   Please answer the following (maximum of 300 words for each section):

a. Why are you pursuing a full-time MBA at this point in your life?

Gurome Tips: In the first section it is important to state your motivation behind pursuing a full-time MBA. You can talk about where you are at your career and where you aim to be. Talk about the gaps in your experience that an MBA would help you plug.  If you think an MBA would enable a career transition mention it here.

b. Define your short and long term career goals post MBA.

Gurome Tips: Be specific in stating your goals immediately post an MBA and longer term. It is important to show the groundwork that you have already done to enable your short-term goal. Mention the steps you plan to take towards your long-term goal once your short-term goal is met.

c. What is it about Chicago Booth that is going to help you reach your goals?

Gurome Tips: A good amount of research about the school would help you answer this question. For example, if you are interested in the alternative energy sector, you can express your interest in the class: " Innovation in Energy Markets and Opportunities in Renewable Energy". You can also do a little bit of research about the energy clubs and how they could benefit you network with the right kind of people.

Ensure that each section seamlessly merges into the other to create a unique story.

Essay 2: Chicago Booth is a place that challenges its students to stretch and take risks that they might not take elsewhere. Tell us about a time when you took a risk and what you learned from that experience (maximum of 750 words).

Gurome Tips: While it is important to provide a background to what led you to take the risk, the focus of this essay should be on the learning you have taken from the experience. You can choose to discuss either a work-related or a non-work experience; however make sure it brings out a few essential qualities in you such as quick thinking; resilience; willingness to shoulder the consequences of a failure, etc.

Essay 3: At Chicago Booth, we teach you HOW to think rather than what to think. With this in mind, we have provided you with "blank pages" in our application. Knowing that there is not a right or even a preferred answer allows you to demonstrate to the committee your ability to navigate ambiguity and provide information that you believe will support your candidacy for Chicago Booth.

Gurome Tips: It is absolutely critical that there is no repetition of ideas here from the previous essays. You can choose to talk about a non-work related activity or anything that you are passionate about. If you want to add pictures or drawings to make the presentation interesting, feel free to do so; however the focus of the presentation should primarily be the content.
