MBA Information Sessions: Some Do's and Don'ts

One of the very first few steps every prospective MBA applicant should possibly consider in the entire MBA application process is how to best interact or connect with the MBA Admissions teams.

The first-hand experiences with the admissions team or even the current students could come in very handy when you are struggling with questions such as "why an MBA", "why in particular this business school or program" in your MBA essay editing. It is always advisable to know all that you can in every possible way about your future schools and their MBA Programs before making that crucial decision.

Since traveling to a school's campus or having an easy access to alumni is not a feasible option for all applicants, majority of the business schools host information sessions across the world in major cities. This serves as a great meeting ground between interested candidates, the admissions officers as well as the alumni and current students where candidates are able to learn more about the schools, programs, and get their queries clarified.

If you do get an opportunity to be a part of such MBA information sessions / MBA Fairs, we advise you not to miss them. In this article, we will list out some pointers for you to keep in mind while visiting these MBA information sessions / MBA Fairs.

1. Since your intention to visit an info session is to know more about your target school and your compatibility with it, we advise you to do some initial research on all your target schools with the help of schools' websites, brochures, all latest rankings, business education news, articles, books, students' blogs and friends / alumni who are pursuing MBAs.

2. Most of the info sessions are held for an exchange of information but there are some sessions where schools conduct the MBA admissions interviews as well. In such cases, we suggest you make the optimum use and fix an appointment well in advance.

3. Whether it is about the teaching processes, culture, current student profiles and career paths or the financial aid/scholarships and living costs, you can get them clarified at these sessions. Be well prepared with all the relevant questions, participate in the event and avoid asking questions that are already pointed out in the respective brochures / websites.

4. There is a possibility that some of the people you will be interacting with at these sessions might help you with your application process or maybe conduct your application interview later. Be well-dressed in semi-formal / formal business attire and cheerful throughout. Keep in touch with them with a sincere thank you or a follow-up with a sincere and sensible query post session.

Lastly, there are different criteria you may consider to evaluate the school such as the type of people you met at the event, level of cooperation from the students, alumni and admissions team, individual interactions, the nature of responses to your queries, etc. We wish you all the best with your MBA Application process!
