Conditional Admissions with Pre-requisite Courses

Sometimes MBA applicants may receive conditional offers to MBA Programs in case they submit the complete application and show great potential for being a successful MBA graduate but fail to fulfill certain academic requirements in their MBA application process. These requirements could be either related to proficiency in English, unclear or partially submitted transcripts, or insufficient academic preparation. The schools might ask the student to re-take a TOEFL test or clear some other English speaking test, etc.

Pre-requisite courses definitely pose a huge financial burden as well as end up consuming precious time. It is highly advisable to opt for offers only where you receive unconditional admission to MBA Programs. Opt for conditional admission offers only if you are really keen to improve your knowledge in those areas otherwise it is always best to get them waived. Another alternative is to schedule a meeting with the school's graduate advisor and convince her about your knowledge in that area on the basis of courses taken in the past or relevant work experience with ample proof.

On the other hand, in absence of any misunderstanding of your transcripts it would be wise to take up those courses in order to perform better in the degree program ahead.

Let us take a look at two possibilities where an applicant would be required to take the pre-requisite courses.

1.    Admission to an entirely different field of study

Here the applicants are being considered for admission on the basis of previous academic scores, GMAT scores, etc and not on the basis of any prior understanding of the new field. As a result of which they are asked by the schools to take up certain courses which could carry on for 4 to 8 semesters. This ensures that they are at par with other students on successful completion and are able to perform well during the course of their MBA Programs.

2.   Admission to the same field of study

There can be a variety of reasons why the schools might ask the candidates to take up the pre-requisite courses. One of the most common reasons is the lack of clarity or certain vagueness in the submitted transcripts. Sometimes courses / subjects are termed as Mathematics-1 and Mathematics-2 for instance, which fail to give a clear idea of the contents of the course. In such cases the schools / university might tend to assume candidates do not know certain subjects relevant to the program and ask them to take up a course in those subjects instead. One more reason often cited is that if the school from which the candidate has completed undergraduate studies is not recognized or known enough; the U.S. schools might have doubts about their academic preparation.
