Answering Right in a Job Interview

A good resume, it is said, whets the appetite of the potential employer and makes him curious to know more about you. Your job interview is therefore your chance to provide your interviewer with everything he wants to hear. What does an interviewer want to hear in an interview? And how should you prepare yourself to convey what he needs to know? Here are a few things to remember when you frame your response:

1. Walk me through your resume: Your interviewer already has a copy of your resume therefore do regurgitate what has already been said. Start from your early professional life drawing on key experiences that have helped you evolve and key targets you have met. Talk about what you did differently and how it impacted the results.

2. Why do you think you are the best candidate for the position: Whether you are asked this question or not, it is important to subtly demonstrate that you know what the job entails and why you are specifically skilled for the position. A little homework about the culture of the organization and a little research on LinkedIn about professionals in similar positions can help you highlight skills that are best suited for the position. Elucidate with examples to make a positive impression.

3. What is the greatest challenge you have faced in your professional life: It is important to prepare in advance for this kind of questions, but remember to choose a challenge which had a positive outcome. It is important to mention why you considered it an important challenge. While narrating focus more on the ingenuity you displayed in resolving the crisis and the lessons you learned along the way. If you were recognized for your contributions, do not forget to mention it.

4. Are you a team player: Resort to examples to answer this kind of questions. "Yes, I am", does not convey much. It is equally important to appear enthusiastic while talking about the team. If you have organized any team event outside work; if you have mentored co-workers, now is the time to talk about them.

5. Are you a problem solver: Employers want to know whether you can get the job done rain or sunshine. You can talk about assembling the best of minds within the organization to find a solution. Demonstrate how resourceful you are by narrating specific instances where you had to think out of the box.
