Gurome's Quant Blog Series – Algebra: Linear Equations A97

Hope you were able to answer the GMAT Math question on Algebra: Linear Equations we posted here yesterday. We have given below the solution along with a detailed explanation.

Explanation:

Let the number of males in the family be m and the number of females in the family be f.

Hence number of chocolates = 4m.

Since each female member gets three chocolates, f females get 3f chocolates.

Also, since each male member gets one chocolate, m males get m chocolates.

Hence 3f + m = 4m implies 3f = 3m or f = m

Therefore, we can say that there are equal number of males and females in the family.

Also since 4f = 4m and number of chocolates is 4m, number of chocolates is four times the number of female members in the family.

The correct answer is C.

Difficulty Level: 560
