Gurome's Quant Blog Series – Algebra: Linear Equations A98

The solution to the DS question on Algebra: Linear Equations we posted here is given below:

Explanation:

Let the cost per pound of almonds = a and cost per pound of cashews = c

The problem asks for the total = 6a + 4c

As per Statement (1), c = 2a, but we have no information on the value of a or c.

Hence, statement (1) is NOT SUFFICIENT.

As per Statement (2), 3a + 2c = $9.80

Multiplying both sides of the above equation by 2, we get the values of 6a + 4c, which will give the total cost of ten pounds of the mix.

Hence, statement (2) is SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is B; Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

Difficulty Level: 600
