Spotlight on Abheyjit Dadwal, Rotman MBA Candidate, 2012

Gurome caught up with Abheyjit Dadwal, Sr. Solutions Integrator at Ericsson India Pvt. Ltd. before he leaves for Toronto, Canada, to join the Rotman School of Management. Here's an excerpt of a very frank and insightful interview with Abheyjit.

1. When did you decide to pursue an MBA?

I have always wanted to pursue an MBA but was never sure about the best time to do it. It was after spending almost 3 years in the telecom industry and getting involved in my father's nascent business in the last one year, I thought of preparing for GMAT and taking the next step towards pursing an MBA.

This time suited me the best because I not only had the optimum level of exposure in the corporate sector to apply and relate to the MBA program but also had no other responsibilities, so I can concentrate 100% on the course.

2. You have been pretty sure that you wanted to pursue an MBA from Canada. How did you do your research on schools?

Considering the present global scenario Canada was always a safe option. The government policies towards the foreign nationals lured me towards searching for a school in Canada.

FT Rankings was the starting point of my school research, the school website and YouTube also helped me in my research. I even contacted the school ambassadors and school administration to extract as much information as I could to make an informed decision.

3. Did the MBA application process ever seem daunting? How did you manage to put together an application in time?

I felt that filling up the applications was the most difficult part in my preparation for an MBA (more difficult than taking the GMAT). The lengthy MBA application essays and the form demanded explicit attention and time.

4. What is your GMAT score?

660

5. Did you ever consider retaking the GMAT? Why not?

I took the GMAT twice. In my first attempt I got 660 and the second time 640. I could not take the risk of taking the GMAT again and thought of filling the application form with the 660 score.

6. You had offers from the two top business schools in Canada; what made you decide in favor of Rotman?

Rotman is primarily known for Finance Research and ranks as one of the top 5 schools in the world for Finance. Although I plan to major in Consultancy, the brand name and the employment report helped me zero in on Rotman.

7. Do you have any special message for MBA aspirants and Gurome students?

MBA is a life changing step, something that could well determine a person's future career path. Pursuing an MBA can never be a wrong decision but timing it is critical. My advice to all the MBA aspirants would be to not rush into it and to have at least 3-4 years of work experience before getting into a Business school. Pre-school experience matters a lot in post MBA course interviews.

Determining whether you want to go for a 1 or a 2-year MBA course is also a major decision. A 1-year course is extremely concise and is designed keeping in mind that the student already has his business basics in place. So I would very strongly recommend a 2-year course to all young professionals.

For Gurome students, I would recommend not to take the application process lightly. Gurome consultants, with their years of experience, will guide you and polish the rough edges in your application. However the hard work has to come from the MBA aspirant. Do not expect miracles without putting in the effort.
